Dubuffet, Jean

   painter, sculptor, writer
Born in Le Havre, Jean Dubuffet pursued his work as wine merchant while being interested in the fine arts (Masques et Marionettes, 1933). After 1942, he devoted himself entirely to painting, while placing himself on the margins of traditional cultural expression (Notes pour les fins lettres, 1946; Positions anti-culturelles, 1951; Asphyxiante Culture, 1968). Admiring ingenuity and spontaneity (he was interested in the art of children and the insane), he developed the concept of "art brut" (L'Art brut préféré aux arts culturels, 1949), or basic primitive art. Many of his pieces are assemblages as well as paintings. Dubuffet's works include series (Marionettes de la ville et de la campagne, 1943-45; Mirobo-lus, Macadam et Cie, 1945; Portraits Plus beaux qu'ils croient, 1947; Corps des dames, 1951; and later, Paris-Circus, 1962), and other pieces (Sols et Terrains, 1952; Pâtes battues; Phénomènes, or Empreintes; Assemblages, 1953-57; Topographies, Texturologies, Matériologies; and L'Hourloupe, 1962; and Closerie Falbala, 1970-73).
